When I heard there was going to be a G.I. Joe movie, I shrugged it off. “Oh, another war move, who cares?” I figured that at best, it would be some Jarhead type thing. A few castings later, I was interested, and a few trailers later, I was looking forward to it.

Anyone who knows me will be able to look at the movie poster and identify the two main reasons I want to see this movie. Oh, and if they had somehow worked Sean Bean into the movie, it may have just been my favorite movie of all time (even if it sucks). Ha! Regardless, I seriously may drag myself to see this sometime this weekend.

I have mentioned it on this site and others and don’t really want to compound what I’m about to say with the acrid remarks I reserve solely for that film.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, while not my favorite novel, is still one of the best of the series. The MAJOR developments and MAJOR history we need to know are all right there in the book. Certainly the movie will give us the information we need to know, right? NO. I watched the first twenty minutes or so of the film, became utterly disgusted and quit it for good.

My thoughts were something like this: That didn’t happen. That isn’t what happened, THAT makes NO sense, OMFG, WHAT?!? Oh, I see Hermione still has constipation face (seriously, Emma Watson is gorgeous, but her portrayal of Hermione makes me want to avoid cheese at all costs…they should spike her pumpkin juice with castor oil), OMG, no, just no no no no no no. Thanks to Cleolinda Jones’ m15m, I now know that somehow the Weasley house gets burned by deatheaters…the fuck?!??!? There’s no way I’m ever going to finish the movie, and I’d say it’s a good bet that I won’t be seeing the final movie(s) either. Pfft.

I knew nothing of it. I really didn’t get on board until the fourth book was released. I anxiously awaited the release of each successive novel and my love of the books remained high while my hatred of the movies grew exponentially following the release of POA. Moving back to the now: Reading that Sean Bean had been cast to play Zeus in an upcoming movie version of Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief piqued my interest. (In all fairness, reading that Sean Bean ate a peanut butter sandwich would pique my interest, though.) It took a conversation between my Brazilian pals to convince me to get to know the content. Well, I guess you could say I “tweetdropped” on their twitter exchange. Heh.

This week, I read the entire Percy Jackson and The Olympians series. I absolutely adore it for many reasons. First and foremost on my list: the mythology. I have always had great interest in Greek mythology and these books had me researching all the characters as I went along to see just how many liberties had been taken with the gods as they were updated for this millennium. I have to admit that I was impressed with the modern take on each of them; even the slightly corny bits worked! Another reason I enjoyed the series was the ease of reading. Since they are technically childrens’ books, they were really quick reads. I also like the writing style of Rick Riordan. Each prophecy or mystery had me wanting, no needing, to know what would happen, and the story avoided so many of the “boy finds his destiny” cliches that I was satisfied with the twists and turns. I only wish there were even more books in the series.

Overall, I truly enjoyed the books and I can only hope the movies will be more Harry Potter and less Eragon in nature. Done properly, kids could one day be asking, “Harry who?”

Stargate Atlantis

3: What fandoms did you mean to get into but didn’t in 2008? Why?
I keep saying I’m going to try BSG, but it hasn’t happened yet.

4: What fandoms do you intend on checking out in 2009?
I’m going to try BSG, I suppose.

5: What fandoms do you think you might let go of in 2009 unless things significantly improve?
Heroes is still a favorite, but I don’t think it will last much longer, so it could be a forced let go.

6: What fandoms do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?
Doctor Who springs to mind. Though not shows, LOTR and The Hobbit will never be let go–ever.

7: What show impressed you most in 2008?
Doctor Who was amazing. Legend of the Seeker was a surprise, so maybe it was the one that impressed me most.

Stargate Atlantis.

While enjoying the LOTR marathon (again), it struck me that The Return of the King was released five years ago. FIVE YEARS. I can’t get over the thrill of excitement every single time I see any of the trilogy. Five years ago my dad and I stood in freezing cold temperatures to get tickets for Ben and me to see the midnight showing and OMG it truly was frigid; yet worth it.

In the last five years: I saw the movie at midnight, again the next afternoon, and again a few days later. I downloaded it, ripped the audio from the movie, burned it to disc, listened to it non-stop in the car, bought the soundtrack, began collecting action figures, fell in love with Sean Bean and David Wenham, named my cats Hobbit and Istar, made nearly 100 fanvids, journeyed into slash, met wonderful fellow fans, read the book repeatedly, read The Hobbit, The Similrillion, and a few other Tolkien works, rewatched the movies (repeatedly, as well), got the “9″ tattoo, scoured online sites and calendar stores for the newest (or leftover) items, and so much more.

It all feels new. Maybe it always will. Can’t wait for the next five years of fandom!

I saw Twilight. Honestly, I did. I even have the ticket stub to prove it. Why, then, am I reading about people’s favorite parts being scenes that I never even saw in the movie? I think I must have blanked during many parts of the movie. Apparently there was something about the 50s that I totally missed. I also missed where Edward bit Bella, unless they’re referring to the after-James fallout. Hmmph.

My next “huh?” is about Pushing Daisies. So, Chuck’s name is Charlotte Charles. Her father’s name is Charles Charles. Her aunt’s names are Lily and Vivian Charles. Vivian was engaged to Charles Charles and Lily, well, you know. So, um, why are they all named “Charles”? Is it just one of those small town quirks where the last name is common even though the people aren’t actually related? I just got to thinking that it was odd. Also? What’s Ned’s last name? Hmmm.

Thanks to Flo, I’ve now read and watched Twilight.  If I was still a teenager, I think I would be in love right now.  As it is, however, we laughed.  A lot.  Inappropriately.  Ha!  To be fair, most of the audience in the theatre laughed along with us, so it’s not just that we’re getting old.  We wore our “Cullen Boys” shirts and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were quite a few adults in attendance.  We struck up a conversation with the ladies behind us and found out they are English teachers and have enjoyed the books, but wanted to know if the film would help or hurt their chances of convincing more teens to read.  Um, good luck, ladies.

Sean Bean finally returned to Crusoe this week.  I’m currently watching on Hulu, and I’m hoping it’s more than the cumulative 3.1 minutes we’ve had so far.  The show’s alright, I suppose, but let’s face it–I only watch for Bean.  SGA was another skip for me this week.  I watched the teaser that showed Shep and Ronon going camping, realized it was the McKay/Keller ep, and promptly deleted it from the DVR.  It still boggles my mind how this show managed to go from my #1 to an automatic delete.  Wow.  As usual, Merlin entertained, even though it was pretty much a filler episode.  Some relationships were heightened slightly, so I guess the ep had its merits.

I’ve been using the new WP for a month or so now, and with this newer version, I can use widgets.  I could never get them to work properly in the past, and to be honest, I didn’t care if they worked or not.  Now, however, you can hardly get through the directory without people calling their code “Plugins” but actually meaning “Widget”.  If you can’t run it as a plugin, you shouldn’t call it as such.  I think WP needs a separate “Widget” listing.  Luckily, some widget authors are willing to help you convert their code to standalone code, such as Peter from AVH Amazon, but most requests go unanswered.  There’s a widget that allows you to execute any standalone code, so to be assured that you can use that dandy new thing you’ve found, you’re almost bound to the use of widgets.  Grr, and OK.  As for the theme, if it won’t load properly, hit the site with a ctrl-f5 and that should do it.

Tuesday and Friday were snow days.  Hooray!Â

SGA is on tonight.  Whoop-de-doo.  I used to love Fridays for that very reason, but this is a Keller ep, so, Bah!  Maybe I’ll hold today’s recordings of Voyager and watch them later instead.  Hey, either way, it’s a Picardo kind of night, no?

My grandmother came out of her surgery much better for it.  They removed some clots and infection and she’s on her way home.  Dad said we might try to make Mom go out for steak tonight, and I certainly hope we do.  There’s a new dish at Texas Steakhouse I want to try:

Coffee Rubbed Steak Skillet: Mesquite-grilled filet tips hand-seasoned with ground coffee and Texas spices served sizzlin’ hot over chipotle BBQ red-eye gravy on a bed of red bliss potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and spicy roasted corn ‘n peppers. Garnished with fresh sliced jalapeños for that added kick.

Yum.

Thanks to a wonderfully geeky transfer student, I was loaned a well-worn copy of Good Omens this weekend. I’ve been urged by Ben to try out Terry Pratchett, but something about the student’s enthusiastic offering of his book made me break down and read it. Though it’s actually by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, it should count toward Ben’s column, no? For a quick little read, I found it charming. Fortunately, I was able to discard the environmental junk and focus on the humor. I’m lucky that way. I’ll seriously consider reading Hitchhiker’s Guide at some point.

Two more British familial castings I knew nothing about: Lupin (HP) is <s>married to</s> with Chuck (PD). Wow! Also? The Doctor’s daughter, IS The (Fifth) Doctor’s daughter. *head spins*

Hurray for Election Day, even if I have no need of primaries.
