Shot or Chop?

Two things happened today, and I’m not which has set Hobbit completely off. First, I ruined my hair. As in, butchered it while trying to cut it myself. I had to get an emergency appointment and found out that my usual repairman has quit the salon. Oh no. The new stylist cut my hair into the most stereotypical hillbilly lesbionic do that all I needed was a flannel shirt and some Birkenstocks. Seriously. I had to have her cut it really short all over. Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby looks like freakin’ Rapunzel next to me. Heh. I’ll really like it in a couple of weeks, though, so I didn’t get too upset.

The second event was that Istar met a new veterinarian today. We both liked her a lot, and he got his seasonal steroid shot to combat his asthma. He still weighs over 18lbs., but at least he hasn’t gained any weight since November. He’s currently resting in his bed and seems to feel just fine.

Diva Hobbit, however, has not stopped hissing since we got home. I was home for only a few minutes between the salon and the vet, so I didn’t really spend any time with her prior to his appointment. I can’t be certain if she’s hissing at Istar or me. She’s about one more hiss away from getting her little butt spanked. The last thing Istar needs is to fight after having to visit the vet, and the last thing I need is a reminder that my head looks scary. So, yeah. Stop it, Hobbit!

I Need Something Good

I didn’t work today because I just didn’t feel “tummy-well”. I decided to surprise everyone by showing up at lunchtime and working half a day, but that didn’t work out too well. In the process, I left a task unfinished and had to allow Mrs. Bush to take up my slack and finish it for me. I HATE that. When she called to tell me my contact was there to pick up some information, my head split open. Fortunately, she is made of gold and handled it for me.

I decided to check on a financial matter that is so bungled up I can’t even go into details. That conversation was unproductive, frustrating, and made my headache so debilitating that I took two more Excedrin while hanging up the phone. Ugh.

Poor Istar seems to have suffered the worst of it; he’s currently running around soaking wet because he won’t let me dry him after his bath. Secretly, I think he likes it. Hobbit’s looking at me like I’m the Executioner and won’t even entertain the thought of staying in my line of sight for long. Heh.

Taking Half

As it turns out, I have to take only half a sick day today; no sooner had the students arrived at school they were heading right back home due to snow. I was busy getting Istar to the vet for his annual breathing treatment. More on that in a minute. I then had the pleasure of going to the dentist for a filling. Ugh. In my 36 years, this is my second filling and I highly doubt I’ll be wanting to repeat this day anytime soon. I had no pain or discomfort prior to today, but now my jaw is throbbing and all I want to do is rip all my teeth from the left side of my mouth. Ouch. The dentist gave me a real Dickens minute by charging me more than $100 LESS than what it was supposed to be. I seriously wanted to yell, “God bless us, every one!” on my way out.

Istar isn’t so lucky. His injection was fine, but he is so overweight (18.3 lbs) that the vet was panicked. I already feed him less than the recommended amount of diet food each day, but now he’s on an even more expensive diet than the one Hobbit was on. I can’t see continually paying $24 for an 8 lb. bag of food, but the vet made me buy it today before he would release Istar. The good news is that he’ll now get to eat more food than before, so maybe he won’t mind the change. We’ll see.

Weekend O’ Hob

The title should actually be “Weekend O’ Hob and the Little Guy, Too!” but there just wasn’t enough space. I’ve felt incredibly tired this week. I haven’t had it this bad since grad school, where I would be sitting in class so tired that it physically hurt to stay awake. I’ve been dropping as soon as I get home, but I can’t seem to get enough sleep. I did catch Fringe of course, but that was the only show I watched first-run this week. I still have Eureka and Top Design to watch, but I have all weekend to get caught up.

The plan is to plant myself firmly on the couch and not move until prompted to do so by Hobbit or Istar. The only thing that would make this a better plan is if it were to rain all weekend.

Greatest Song EVER

It’s been over two decades since Band Aid’s masterful Christmas song “Do They Know It’s Christmas” was released. It’s been nearly that long since I saw the video. Today, however, it all came flooding back to me while looking for holiday songs to burn to disc for Jamie.

I remember the pure, unadulterated (or was it adulterated?!?) glee I had watching the video trying to spot Simon Le Bon. I remember being disappointed that Simon didn’t have more lines and thinking that Boy George sure got a lot of play. I remember taping the music video on grainy VCR tapes and watching until the tapes damn near disintegrated. It really was all about Duran Duran in those days. Some days, it still is.

Today, even though it’s been decades, I found myself singing along, using the singers’ characteristics, from Simon’s throatiness, to Boy George’s effeminate offerings, to Sting’s clipped singing of “bitter sting of tears”. I then, on the bell rings, actually made the bell ringing motion in the air. You KNOW what I mean, because some of you do it, too. I know you do. I think Hobbit made a couple bell rings herself, and Istar is kind of dancing around to the tune just now.

I think I’ll head over to ~~Hell~~ YouTube and see if I can find a video of it.

Wishes

No, not Christmas wishes. Here’s to a painless recovery for Goober, a Happy Birthday (tomorrow) for Jamie, no more trips to the ER for Scott or Jamie, and a better episode of Heroes tomorrow. I hate Elle. I honestly gave her (and Kristen Bell) a chance, but nope, HATE them both. I wish she would die. Seriously (just the character).

I continue to love Robin Hood. A lot. Some of the cast are rumored to have signed on for Series 3, which is great news. I hate that British shows are so short. The seasons are short and the run of the show is short. With a few exceptions, all the great shows are gone in no time; Spaced and The Office come to mind immediately. I expect we’ll be getting the Doctor Who Christmas special soon, though I haven’t checked out the date yet.

Huge thanks to my Mom, who not only turned my kitchen into a supermarket, but who also turned my wallet into a bank. She’s got magical powers, that one.

Istar’s vet visit went as expected. He’s now a whopping 17lbs. and he received another steroid injection as well as an antibiotic just in case he has a respiratory infection to boot. Too bad he prefers to wear the medicine as to swallow it. Oh well, we’ll keep trying. Hobbit hissed up a fit when he came home, but she seems to be over her little diva stunt….for now.

The Last Two Weeks

Nice Heroes-like title, no?

After a great visit with bigbenalpha, indiecowboy, and Jonas (who is just purrrrr-fect), I started to get into the holiday spirit…a little.

I’m finished decorating, which actually consisted of me throwing a few things around. Seriously, I spent about six minutes, total. More importantly, I’m in serious love with Robin Hood. It’s just one of those shows that gets into my soul and I can’t explain why. I know Ben hates it, but I don’t care. I love him, and he loves me, dammit. I love it so much, I made a vid this weekend. It’s a Robin Hood vid with a really beautiful song by Jimmy Eat World. It’s an angsty little thing, and it’s more of an introductory vid, but for those who don’t want any spoilers for Series 2, it’s off limits.

I have a long week ahead including a 12 hour work day Tuesday, a field trip across three states Wednesday, and possibly a trip to the vet on Friday (Istar is having a few asthma attacks again), so if I’m not around, that’s why.

Prognosis; Good

Poor Istar. He didn’t get to come home until 8:30pm. I’m not sure what would have happened had I not gotten a bit cross with the staff. At 8:00pm, I had been waiting in the waiting room for over an hour and they had told me that he hadn’t yet been seen because they couldn’t get him to come out of the crate. There had been several emergencies taken ahead of him, which I totally understand, and there was a grieving family who had just decided to put their puppy to sleep due to parvovirus. I was crying, they were crying, and all I wanted to do was get Istar home. They took me to the back to see if I could coax him out of the crate, and no sooner had I said, “There’s my little guy!” that he jumped out of the crate into my arms.

The vet stopped what he was doing to come over to see Istar. I don’t know if he was mad at me for (rather rudely) asking to have my cat, or if he was apologetic for making Istar wait over 12 hours to be seen, but he stopped me from leaving to examine Istar and give him a shot for what he thinks is a small asthmatic incident. Well, damn. Once again, my actions have sent him to vet. It was probably a combination of smoke and anti-smoke candles that did him in. I’ve already begun eliminating all sources of typical irritants and hopefully, we won’t have any more problems.

They were able to weigh Istar before crating him, and DAMN! He weighs 15.2 lbs. He now weighs more than Hobbit ever did, but he carries it better. The vet wasn’t even concerned about it, but did say to not let him get any bigger. Hobbit, for the record, is down to about 12 lbs. and looking svelte!

P.S. Flash Gordon is possibly the worst show I’ve ever seen.

Sick Out

I’m home sick today. Worse than that, Istar is at the vet’s office. I had to have him there between 7:30 and 8:30am and they said although they had no appointments available, they’d see him. When I called at the predetermined time (2:00pm), they hadn’t even looked at him yet. That seriously sucks. He’s going all day with no food and no care. I (and they) think he may have a respiratory infection, so I can’t just go get him without him being seen. Hopefully, they’ll get to him soon and it’ll be something an antibiotic can handle.

I’m on Tylenol Severe Cold meds, in case you were wondering.

In other news, Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style is awful. It’s What Not To Wear without the fun. Bad choice, Tim. Oh, and the normally stunning Veronica Webb is looking, um, less than super. I nearly spit out my drink when her blush made it’s screen debut (I think it has it’s own SAG card). I guess she was trying to distract us from her unfortunate haircut (think Posh, only NOT). That’s alright, dear, it will grow back out. Trust me. I’ve already removed the show from my DVR lineup and won’t miss it one bit.

Sonic Feeder

I feel bad for laughing. A little.

Istar was watching Doctor Who‘s “The Runaway Bride” with me when The Doctor used his sonic screwdriver to open the Tardis. I never noticed before, but Hobbit and Istar’s new feeders make the exact same sound as the screwdriver when they rotate for feeding times. Needless to say, Istar bolted into his room expecting dinner and returned vocally displeased at his deception.

Improving UPS

I love UPS. I have rarely had a problem with them. This isn’t a gripe, so much as a suggestion.

I’ll start at the beginning of my brilliant flash. Hobbit and Istar are in dire need of automatic feeders. Each of them believes themselves to be either pigs or goldfish, willing to eat themselves to death. Therefore, I ordered two feeders from Amazon.com. UPS brought my packages to me today, days before the estimated delivery date. Thanks!

I can’t use the feeders yet. Why? I have no 9-volt batteries. It is my suggestion that UPS drivers start carrying batteries on their trucks, much like the vendors on Doctor Who who seem to have everything you could ever want. Think of the money they’d make off of battery sales!

Gosh, I’m lazy.

That’s My Girl

While talking to a delivery guy, a fly got into the house. I watched Istar jump around like some Cirque du Soleil performer trying to catch it for quite a bit while Hobbit just patiently sat and watched. I guess he got tired of it and left to do other things because a second ago, I heard a small thump, looked over at the door, and saw Hob enjoying her kill. Yes, Hobbit killed it with one swift blow.

God, I love that cat. She is, and always will be, the best, most talented, prettiest, wonderfullest, smartest kitty EVER!

I Leave For 5 Minutes…

…and the state of affairs is NOT good. Istar seems to be healed up quite nicely. He finished his second round of antibiotic Saturday and now he’s taking only the microbial replacement therapy (which prevents upset tummy).

However, the news about Season 4 of SGA is NOT looking good. First off, we find out that a beloved cast member will “go missing” and that the Wraith aren’t the main villains anymore, but the Replicators will become so. We know that we’re getting a cast member from the junk heap that was Firefly (sorry fans), and now comes word that Weir is leaving?!? The backbone of the show?!?! Recurring. Yeah, ask Ford about that one. Arrrrrgh! I don’t know if I can watch SGA without Weir. I could do without anyone (even Ronon!) except Weir and Sheppard. Woes!!!

Oh, and ironically enough, I finished the new (and default) theme, Team, before I read all the latest SGA news. Joke’s on me.

Home Again…for good!

He’s home! Istar is home and ~~whining~~ chilling in his plush kitty suite. He looks great and has a lot more spunk than when he went to the vet’s office. I know being alone in the bedroom is hard on him, and I’ll keep him company much of the time. I have to remember that it’s better for him to be alone in there watching television than to be in a crate at the vet’s. Hobbit is NOT pleased with being separated from him, but until he heals, that’s the way it’s going to be. With work kicking into high gear and our internet connections going wonky and spotty, I probably won’t be able to do much browsing during the day, and as promised, I won’t be around here much, either. Take care of each other while I’m away.
