Saying Goodbye

Warehouse 13 recently concluded its second season, and I’m so sad to say that I won’t be back for a third, even if the show is renewed. It’s really hard to say goodbye to the show because I could see it being my #1 show if the true stars of the show remained Myka and Pete (and Artie, to lesser extent).

Instead of acclimating to the addition of Claudia, I have found the character, and the actress, to be more and more distasteful. I place the blame evenly on poor writing and poor acting. The character routinely reminds us that she is a young genius, yet she attempts to throw out cool 80’s references a la Shawn and Gus from Psych. The combination rings false. Claudia is also supposed to be some modern punk (I suppose) with her Kool-Aid striped hair and Hot Topic wardrobe. This would have been almost cool around seven or eight years ago. As it is, the whole look is cliched and played out. The actress has begun to clean up her speech, but her tendency to mumble and vomit up words is still too pronounced for me to be able to sit through any dialogue involving Claudia.

I tried to fast forward through any Claudia scenes all through Season 2, but in the end, I finalized the split by deleting Warehouse 13 from my DVR for good. Now I selfishly hope that it doesn’t get renewed because I really am going to miss the stories, the artifacts, Pete, Myka, Artie, Leena, and Mrs. Frederick.

I also deleted Glee from DVR, but I have to admit that I felt much less regret than with WH13. I guess I’m too old to really care about most of the music played, and I never cared for the lead actress’ voice at all. I really only cared about Shu and Finn, and all of the “Hot News” in the off season was about Kirk and who would play his bf, so I took that as a sign to run. I wish the show well, though, and that’s more than I can say about most.

Overt Love For Covert Affairs

I’m not a fan of spy movies. I’d even go so far as to say I’m anti-spy movies. Covert Affairs escapes the trappings of the high suspense spy film by haphazardly throwing our heroine Annie into situations she is not equipped to handle. Though we get the episodic chase scene, the rest of each episode is filled with the budding friendship of Annie and Auggie (played deftly by Christopher Gorham of Ugly Betty and Harper’s Island fame) and Annie’s quest to prove herself in a sea of much more experienced agents.

The plotlines seem farfetched to me, though this could be the way of the CIA in actuality for all I know. The stories are just complex enough to provoke a bit of thought without becoming too muddled and I find this to be the deciding factor in whether to add this fandom or not. The cast really seems to work well together, and the guest stars are superb. The addition of Sendhil Ramamurthy (Heroes‘ Mohinder) to the lineup makes the rest of the cast seem even more legitimate somehow. Peter Gallagher is solid as the husband (and CIA bigwig) of Annie’s boss, and Annie (Piper Perabo) is growing on me with each new episode.

The first scene of the series played far too long (or so I thought), but now I’m really anxious to see how Annie’s prior relationship will come into play in her future. I’m sure it will be quite the (covert) affair to remember. *ahem*

Covert Affairs has quickly become my “Summer Show” this year and I look forward to seeing more next season.

Eureka’s On A Wild Ride

Season 1 of Eureka was fresh and innovative. The theme song and credits alone were the greatest thing on television. At its best Eureka stayed quirky and fun, at its worst, Eureka remained solid. Not too bad, if you ask me. Though I wasn’t the biggest fan of Season 3.5 (probably because Tess just doesn’t do it for me), Season 4 has come roaring onto the scene in no small manner.

Eureka (the town) has changed, possibly for the better, maybe for destruction. As a show, the change was more than a shot in the arm, it created a whole new world. The brilliant writers now have license to go in any direction with our beloved characters, even backward. This is the first GIANT manipulation that seems natural and doesn’t bother me; in fact, it intrigues me so much that I can’t wait for the next episode! The cast continues to impress me, even some of the new additions. Oddly enough, the SyFy Eureka site has pics from the original cast. However, there’s still no sign of Nathan, and I would have thought that this new guy from BSG would have been a major selling point for them. Whatever.

One of my complaints about the show has been the overemphasis on the personal and relationship matters, but now that time continuum issues are involved, I’m on board with the will they/won’t they for all the couples affected. Seeing Alison’s anguish over possibly losing her new-found connection with Kevin is heartbreaking, and don’t even get me started on Jo! Our poor Sheriff Carter has also found himself between a rock and a hard place. Jack? If you need anyone to break the bad news to your housemate, have SARAH give me a call. I’ll fill her in on the non-classified details.

Are You Happy (Town) Now?

Wow. Though I had one person tell me via Twitter that Happy Town has a HUGE following, as expected, it was canceled. The last two episodes can be seen online only, and I have seen them. Wow. Um. Yeah. The risks in following new shows are A) The constant fear of cancellation when you love them (Legend of the Seeker), B) The realization that the show is terrible (The Gates), C) That a show won’t be able to find it’s way in time (Happy Town).

I’m not going to do any background checking to see if the last episode was re-edited as the finale, but I can only imagine that it was. We got most of the answers to the big questions (Who is the Magic Man? What’s the deal with Dan?), but the details that could have been fleshed out over time would have made the show so much better. For instance, I still have no idea what Henley’s deal was. Is she Chloe? If so, big deal. We don’t know the significance of “Chloe” at all. Her last phone call was a bit contradictory, but was is significant? And the Magic Man. Whoa. How did the Magic Man get away with everything when the identity wasn’t exactly secret at all? Magic, I guess. *pfft*

Regardless, I guess in the end, I don’t regret having watched the show, and that’s a lot more than I can say about most of them.
