Is This Planet Protected?

The new season of Doctor Who began today with a very triumphant debut of the Eleventh Doctor. There is a definite shift in tone from the previous series (or non-series as it was), and I think this is exactly the episode to reset with. The introduction of Amy Pond was the best companion beginning yet, and I already love her. The rest of the plot didn’t really blow my mind, but the nod to the previous Doctors was glorious and brought out an actual cheer. I think Eleven is a very capable incarnation and I look forward to seeing him in action week after week.

I’m already re-watching because I let a lot of information slip past me the first time. I also want to compile a list of “clues” to watch for as the series progresses because I think there will be quite the payoff with this writing team. For instance, there is a blue lens flare that lingers for a considerable amount of time when there is no known source of light for that scene. Hmmmm. I’m also curious about the possible significance of the “Myth” laptop. Each of those things may be inconsequential, of course, or they could be related to the coming Silence. Who knows?

Who knows, indeed!! *ahem*

  2. Lately I’ve found myself thinking about if it’s actually realistic to run online slot games with decent performance on an budget piece of hardware, considering most recently released iGaming products are designed overwhelmingly for premium chipsets as the target. This has been a recurring thought whenever I open one of these sites, given that plenty of people owns a brand-new handset, but still the expectation online seems to be that performance won’t be an issue.
With that question nagging at me, I went ahead and tested it out firsthand on https://aquavitae.bar/, mostly because I’d heard that the site performed decently even on less powerful hardware. To my surprise, the platform performed far more reliably than I thought it would, notwithstanding my device is quite a few generations behind and far from a powerhouse — exactly the sort of device most reviewers would immediately dismiss using for anything beyond basic apps.
With a little fiddling around, what I landed on was that opening in the phone’s built-in browser as opposed to a dedicated app produced less interruptions, a result which made sense, since apps often drain far more RAM behind the scenes. Lowering the visual settings when available also took a lot of the strain off, above all on slower processors that often choke when faced with constant visual effects.
Worth mentioning too, clearing unused processes right before opening a session appeared to free up noticeably more memory to help everything stay performing consistently. I also noticed that a reasonably strong Wi-Fi connection played a bigger role than I initially assumed, because even a reasonably modern phone, a spotty connection will still cause lag. Closing additional processes running simultaneously during playing would often introduce extra lag, so shutting them down in advance is a small habit which pays off.
If someone reading this has been wondering the same thing, the link is https://aquavitae.bar/ — works fine even on my hand-me-down device, and it’s probably worth a try even if your setup falls well short of state of the art. All things considered, the takeaway is that a smooth experience on older hardware depends mostly on a few simple habits rather than depending on a brand-new device to begin with.
