Finally! This year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, “A Christmas Carol”, aimed to be more Christmas than special and become the most special Christmas special of them all.
Fortunately, there was no world domination plot, no ridiculous villain to fight, no messianic Doctor, and it WORKED. At its core, this was a story of love, loss, and redemption….all the things that a Christmas special need. I don’t know where they found young Kazran, but that boy absolutely killed it. Actually, everyone was fantastic. I loved seeing Rory and Amy honeymooning, and the juxtaposition of their ultra modern ship crashing into the Old World-esque planet was a great way to tie them in.
The Eleventh Doctor has the benefit of a tremendous production team, and though I love Nine’s entire being, I would have to say that Eleven has become my second favorite Doctor, well on his way to becoming my favorite.
Halfway out of the dark has never been so grand.

The directives largely roll back efforts made over the last decade attempting to eradicate toxic culture in the military, both to decrease harmful behaviors like harassment, but also to meet practical needs of getting people in uniform and keeping them there longer as the military branches faced years of struggles filling the ranks.
kra49 ??
Many major reforms were described by the officials who implemented them as driven by that need; when former Defense Secretary Ash Carter opened up combat roles to women in 2015, he said the military âcannot afford to cut ourselves off from half the countryâs talents and skillsâ if it wanted to succeed in national defense.
kra49 ??
And while the military had made changes in recent years in an attempt to lessen instances of harassment, discrimination or toxic leadership by creating reporting mechanisms so that troops would come forward, Hegseth said those efforts went too far and were undercutting commanders.
âThe definition of âtoxicâ has been turned upside down, and weâre correcting that,â Hegseth vowed on Tuesday, adding that the Defense Department would be undertaking a review of words like âhazingâ and âbullyingâ which he said had been âweaponized.â

The scale of these recent attacks means Ukraine needs any help it can get to minimize the impacts â and volunteers are playing an increasingly important role in the defensive mix.

Civilians are forming units tasked with shooting down smaller drones with machine guns or, most recently, specially developed interceptor drones.

The chief of staff of one of Kyivâs volunteer formation legions, Andriy, whose call-sign is Stolyar, said his unit is composed of people from all walks of life â from construction workers to businessmen to poets.
He told CNN the training for his legion lasts for about six weeks and includes basic knowledge, simulator practice and topography lessons. Andriy asked for his last name not to be published for security reasons.
âA person must understand how to operate an aircraft. Drones are becoming increasingly complex â this is aviation, and it requires constant attention, knowledge, and skills,â he said.

Target is in trouble. And while itâs easy to get lost in the companyâs recent (poor) handling of American culture war narratives that cast it as too âwokeâ or too willing to cave to online fascists, the root of Targetâs problems runs deep.
???? ????
Donât get me wrong â the massive consumer boycotts from Black organizers have done damage. And there are probably folks on the far right who think even Targetâs toned-down, overwhelmingly beige Pride merch this year was still too loud.

But its stock is in the gutter and sales have been falling for two years because of good olâ business fundamentals. It overstocked. It lost the pulse of its customers. It went up against Amazon Prime with⊠actually, does anyone know what Targetâs Amazon Prime competitor is called?
The brand we petite bourgeoisie once playfully referred to as Tar-zhay has lost its spark. The company reported a decline in sales for a third-straight quarter, part of a broader trend of falling or flat sales for two years. Employees have lost confidence in the companyâs direction. And 2025 has been a particularly rough financially, as Black shoppers organized a boycott over Targetâs decision to cave to right-wing pressure on diverse hiring goals.
Shares were down 10% Wednesday.
Itâs not to say the new guy, Michael Fiddelke, is unqualified. Heâs been at Target since he started as an intern more than 20 years ago, after all. But Wall Street is clearly concerned that Targetâs leadership is underestimating the severity of the need for a significant changeâ just as President Donald Trumpâs tariffs on imported goods threaten the entire retail industry.
Appointing a company lifer âdoes not necessarily remedy the problems of entrenched groupthink and the inward-looking mindset that have plagued Target for years,â Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients Wednesday.
Missing the mark
In its 2010s heyday, Target became a go-to for consumers who liked a bargain but didnât necessarily like bargain-hunting. The shelves felt well-curated. Youâd go to Target because it had one thing you needed and 12 things you didnât know you needed. It was stocked with Millennial cringe long before Gen Z gave us the term Millennial cringe.
Targetâs sales held strong through the pandemic as remote workers set up home offices and stocked up on essentials. Months of lockdown also benefited the store as people began refreshing their spaces because they didnât really have much else to do and they were staring at the same walls all the time.

Increasingly, it appears likely he will be told to give up land in exchange for some sort of security guarantees.
The land side of that âdealâ will be obvious. It can be drawn on a map. Crimea: gone, says Trump. Donetsk: give all of it up, says Putin, apparently with Trumpâs blessing.
But the security guarantees? Thatâs where far more challenging ideas, like credibility, come into play. Could Zelensky rely on the US to deliver on some NATO Article 5-type promise, to defend Ukraine if Russia breaches any peace agreement?
Putin himself might even see an opportunity to further weaken the West, by testing any such guarantees, confident they are a bluff he could call. But all that would be for the future.
For now, it looks like Zelensky will have to weigh up whether he could bring his country with him if he were to cede territory to Russia â some of it still in Ukrainian hands â or whether he and his people could bear the costs of potentially defying Trump a Nobel Peace Prize, and say no.
If he chose the latter, would the US President immediately end all remaining American support for Ukraine, in terms of military aid and intelligence sharing, for instance?
If that happened, to what extent could Zelenskyâs European allies really step in and fill in the gaps left by any full US retreat?
It is an almost impossibly hard choice before him.

Lying down and vomiting between courses: This is how Ancient Romans would feast
rutorforum.at
Imagine, if you will, the most glorious festive feast, with an oversize turkey, stuffing two ways, holiday ham, the requisite fixings and at least half a dozen pies and cakes. That may all sound grand â that is, until you consider the extravagant displays of the ancient Roman banquet.
Members of the Roman upper classes regularly indulged in lavish, hours-long feasts that served to broadcast their wealth and status in ways that eclipse our notions of a resplendent meal. âEating was the supreme act of civilization and celebration of life,â said Alberto Jori, professor of ancient philosophy at the University of Ferrara in Italy.
https://rutordev.com
rutor-24.at
Ancient Romans enjoyed sweet and salty concoctions. Lagane, a rustic short pasta usually served with chickpeas, was also used to make a honey cake with fresh ricotta cheese. The Romans used garum, a pungent, salty fermented fish sauce for umami flavor in all dishes, even as a dessert topping. (For context, garum has a similar flavor profile and composition to current-day Asian fish sauces such as Vietnamâs nuoc mam and Thailandâs nam pla.) The prized condiment was made by leaving fish meat, blood and guts to ferment inside containers under the Mediterranean sun.
Game meat such as venison, wild boar, rabbit and pheasant along with seafood like raw oysters, shellfish and lobster were just some of the pricey foods that made regular appearances at the Roman banquet.
Whatâs more, hosts played a game of one-upmanship by serving over-the-top, exotic dishes like parrot tongue stew and stuffed dormouse. âDormouse was a delicacy that farmers fattened up for months inside pots and then sold at markets,â Jori said. âWhile huge quantities of parrots were killed to have enough tongues to make fricassee.â

The US and Israel had asked Qatar to host Hamas leaders. Hamasâ location was not a secret. There was an unstated understanding that while Israel could assassinate the leaders, they would not do so, given Qatarâs mediation role.
The strike makes a hostage deal less likely, since any agreement requires negotiating with Hamas leadership in Doha.

Scientists discovered something alarming seeping out from beneath the ocean around Antarctica
??????? ????? ?????
Planet-heating methane is escaping from cracks in the Antarctic seabed as the region warms, with new seeps being discovered at an âastonishing rate,â scientists have found, raising fears that future global warming predictions may have been underestimated.
Huge amounts of methane lie in reservoirs that have formed over millennia beneath the seafloor around the world. This invisible, climate-polluting gas can escape into the water through fissures in the sea floor, often revealing itself with a stream of bubbles weaving their way up to the ocean surface.
https://riasv.ru/obshhestvo/2022/04/11/chto-izvestno-o-glave-finansovoi-piramidy-life-is-good-romane-vasilenko/
??????? ???????? ????
Relatively little is known about these underwater seeps, how they work, how many there are, and how much methane reaches the atmosphere versus how much is eaten by methane-munching microbes living beneath the ocean.
But scientists are keen to better understand them, as this super-polluting gas traps around 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide in its first 20 years in the atmosphere.
Methane seeps in Antarctica are among the least understood on the planet, so a team of international scientists set out to find them. They used a combination of ship-based acoustic surveys, remotely operated vehicles and divers to sample a range of sites in the Ross Sea, a bay in Antarcticaâs Southern Ocean, at depths between 16 and 790 feet.
What they found surprised them. They identified more than 40 methane seeps in the shallow water of the Ross Sea, according to the study published this month in Nature Communications.
Bubbles rising from a methane seep at Cape Evans, Antarctica. Leigh Tate, Earth Sciences New Zealand
Many of the seeps were found at sites that had been repeatedly studied before, suggesting they were new. This may indicate a âfundamental shiftâ in the methane released in the region, according to the report.
Methane seeps are relatively common globally, but previously there was only one confirmed active seep in the Antarctic, said Sarah Seabrook, a report author and a marine scientist at Earth Sciences New Zealand, a research organization. âSomething that was thought to be rare is now seemingly becoming widespread,â she told CNN.
Every seep they discovered was accompanied by an âimmediate excitementâ that was âquickly replaced with anxiety and concern,â Seabrook said.
The fear is these seeps could rapidly transfer methane into the atmosphere, making them a source of planet-heating pollution that is not currently factored into future climate change predictions.
The scientists are also concerned the methane could have cascading impacts on marine life.

Scientist Kate Adamala doesnât remember exactly when she realized her lab at the University of Minnesota was working on something potentially dangerous â so dangerous in fact that some researchers think it could pose an existential risk to all life forms on Earth.
She was one of four researchers awarded a $4 million US National Science Foundation grant in 2019 to investigate whether itâs possible to produce a mirror cell, in which the structure of all of its component biomolecules is the reverse of whatâs found in normal cells.
The work was important, they thought, because such reversed cells, which have never existed in nature, could shed light on the origins of life and make it easier to create molecules with therapeutic value, potentially tackling significant medical challenges such as infectious disease and superbugs. But doubt crept in.
âIt was never one light bulb moment. It was kind of a slow boiling over a few months,â Adamala, a synthetic biologist, said. People started asking questions, she added, âand we thought we can answer them, and then we realized we cannot.â
The questions hinged on what would happen if scientists succeeded in making a âmirror organismâ such as a bacterium from molecules that are the mirror images of their natural forms. Could it inadvertently spread unchecked in the body or an environment, posing grave risks to human health and dire consequences for the planet? Or would it merely fizzle out and harmlessly disappear without a trace?

âą Zelensky in Washington: European leaders will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, as he meets with US President Donald Trump this afternoon. Trump said Zelensky must agree to some of Russiaâs conditions â including that Ukraine cede Crimea and agree never to join NATO â for the war to end.
kra31 cc
âą Potential security guarantees: At last weekâs summit with Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow security guarantees for Ukraine and made concessions on âland swapsâ as part of a potential peace deal, US envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN. Zelensky suggested that such guarantees would need to be stronger than those that âdidnât workâ in the past. Russia has yet to mention such agreements.
kra32 cc
âą On the ground: Zelensky condemned Russiaâs latest strikes across Ukraine, which killed at least 10 people, saying the Kremlin intends to âhumiliate diplomatic effortsâ and underscores âwhy reliable security guarantees are required.â

Don Mueang International Airport, Thailand (DMK)

Are you an avgeek with a mean handicap? Then itâs time to tee off in Bangkok, where Don Mueang International Airport has an 18-hole golf course between its two runways. If youâre nervous from a safety point of view, donât be â players at the Kantarat course must go through airport-style security before they hit the grass. Oh, you meant safety on the course? Just beware of those flying balls, because there are no barriers between the course and the runways. Players are, at least, shown a red light when a plane is coming in to land so donât get too distracted by the game.

Although Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is Bangkokâs main airport these days â it opened in 2006 âDon Mueang, which started out as a Royal Thai Air Force base in 1914, remains Bangkokâs budget airline hub, with brands including Thai Air Asia and Thai Lion Air using it as their base. Although youâre more likely to see narrowbodies these days, you may just get lucky â in 2022, an Emirates A380 made an emergency landing here. Imagine the views from the course that day.

Planning a trip to Jarlshof, the extraordinarily well-preserved Bronze Age settlement towards the southern tip of Shetland? You may need to build in some extra time. The ancient and Viking-era ruins, called one of the UKâs greatest archaeological sites, sit just beyond one of the runways of Sumburgh, Shetlandâs main airport â and reaching them means driving, cycling or walking across the runway itself.
Thereâs only one road heading due south from the capital, Lerwick; and while it ducks around most of the airportâs perimeter, skirting the two runways, the road cuts directly across the western end of one of them. A staff member occupies a roadside hut, and before take-offs and landings, comes out to lower a barrier across the road. Once the plane is where it needs to be, up come the barriers and waiting drivers get a friendly thumbs up.

Imagine flying into Majuro, the capital of the Marshall Islands in Micronesia. Youâre descending down, down, and further down towards the Pacific, no land in sight. Then youâre suddenly above a pencil-thin atoll â can you really be about to land here? Yes you are, with cars racing past the runway no less, matching you for speed.
Majuroâs Amata Kabua International Airport gives a whole new meaning to the phrase âwater landingâ. Its single runway, just shy of 8,000ft, is a slim strip of asphalt over the sandbar thatâs barely any wider than the atoll itself â and the island is so remote that when the runway was resurfaced, materials had to be transported from the Philippines, Hong Kong and Korea, according to the constructors. âLagoon Roadâ â the 30-mile road that runs from top to toe on Majuro â skims alongside the runway.
Donât think about pulling over, though â thereâs only sand and sea on one side, and that runway the other.

Elusive shipwreck found in Lake Michigan over 100 years after sinking
rutorforum24 to
A âghost shipâ that sank in Lake Michigan nearly 140 years ago and eluded several search efforts over the past five decades has been found, according to researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association.
The wooden schooner got caught in a storm in the dead of night and went down in September 1886. In the weeks after, a lighthouse keeper reported the shipâs masts breaking the lake surface, and fishermen caught pieces of the vessel in their nets. Still, wreck hunters were unable to track down the shipâs location â until now.

Earlier this year, a team of researchers with the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association and Wisconsin Historical Society located the shipwreck off the coastal town of Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, the association announced on Sunday.
Named the F.J. King, the ship had become a legend within the Wisconsin wreck hunter community for its elusive nature, said maritime historian Brendon Baillod, principal investigator and project lead of the discovery.
âWe really wanted to solve this mystery, and we didnât expect to,â Baillod told CNN. â(The ship) seemed to have just vanished into thin air. ⊠I actually couldnât believe we found it.â
The wreck is just one of many that have been found in the Great Lakes in recent years, and there are still hundreds left to be recovered in Lake Michigan alone, according to Baillod.
The âghost shipâ
Built in 1867, the F.J. King plied the waters of the Great Lakes for the purpose of trans-lake commerce. The ship transported grains during a time when Wisconsin served as the breadbasket of the United States. The 144-foot-long (44-meter) vessel also carried cargo including iron ore, lumber and more.
The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the shipâs yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.

A seabed of shipwrecks
????? ???????
The Great Lakes have the most shipwrecks per square mile among all bodies of water in the world, largely due to the high shipping traffic in the 19th century and the lakeâs volatile weather. Researchers know about the wrecks because reporting any commercial ship that sails on the lakes is required; from the early 19th century to the 20th century, about 40,000 ships sailed the Great Lakes, Baillod said.
There are about 6,000 commercial vessels on the seabed of the Great Lakes, lost to storms or other issues. In Lake Michigan alone, there are over 200 shipwrecks waiting to be discovered, according to Baillod, who has created a database of these ships over the past three decades.
https://rutorcoolfldlmrpalkmfklw3nyzad6b6fycdtof3xbnixkerr47udyd.com
rutor-24 at
Wrecks in the Great Lakes have been found since the 1960s, but in recent years the rate of these finds has accelerated greatly, in part due to media attention, clearer waters and better technology, Baillod said. Some wreck hunters and media outlets call this the golden age for shipwreck discoveries.
âThereâs a lot more shipwreck awareness now on the Great Lakes, and people are looking down in the water at whatâs on the bottom,â he added. Part of the reason itâs easier to see in the water is thanks to quagga mussels â an invasive species that was introduced in the 1990s. The mollusks have filtered most of the lakes, turning them from their old greenish hue, which allowed for only a few feet of visibility, to clear blue. Now, the lakes have visibility of up to 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30.5 meters), Baillod explained.
âTourism has popped up around paddle boarding and kayaking, and these shipwrecks are visible from the surface because the water is so clear,â he added.

The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, has a project in the works to map the bottom of the Great Lakes in high resolution by 2030. If the organization succeeds, all shipwrecks will be found, Baillod said.
In the meantime, Baillod said he hopes he and his team will continue to discover missing shipwrecks from his database in the coming years and bring along citizen scientists for the ride: âI keep looking, and I donât doubt that weâll keep finding.â
Disney made a smart choiceâ
Despite the comparisons, Abu Dhabi isnât positioning itself as a direct rival to Orlando â itâs aiming to be something more. The emirate sees its theme parks as part of a bigger portfolio of attractions, alongside cultural landmarks, luxury hotels, pristine beaches, and desert adventures.
???????? ????
A 15-minute drive from Yas Island, Saadiyat Island is home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a franchised outpost of the famous Paris art museum, which welcomed 1.4 million visitors last year, 84% from abroad. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and Zayed National Museum are both under construction, adding to a cultural district that will be one of the regionâs most concentrated hubs of art and heritage.
âAbu Dhabiâs unique appeal lies in the diversity of our tourism offering,â Al Geziry added. âFor thrill-seekers, we have record-breaking roller coasters and dune bashing in the desert. For culture lovers, historic sites like Al Ain Oasis and institutions like the Saadiyat museums. And for luxury travelers, world-class dining, private island resorts, and high-end shopping.
âWhere else can you start your day under the Louvreâs iconic rain-of-light dome and end it in the immersive, story-driven worlds of Warner Bros. World or Ferrari World?â

Still, not everyone is convinced that Disneyâs expansion into the Middle East is a sure bet.
âThe region has seen its share of false starts,â says Dennis Speigel, founder of the International Theme Park Services consultancy, comparing it to neighboring Dubaiâs patchy record with theme park expansion ambitions in the mid-2010s. âSeveral of them struggled for profitability in their first decade.â

Spiegel believes Abu Dhabi is different. âDisney made a smart choice. The infrastructure, safety, and existing leisure developments create an ideal entry point,â he told CNN earlier this year. âItâs a much more controlled and calculated move.â
Under its Tourism Strategy 2030, Abu Dhabi aims to grow annual visitors from 24 million in 2023 to more than 39 million by the end of the decade. With Disneyland as a centerpiece, those targets may well be surpassed. The cityâs population has already grown from 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 4.1 million today, a reflection of its rising profile as a regional hub.
Yas Island alone has been transformed in the space of a decade from a largely undeveloped stretch of sand to a self-contained resort destination, complete with golf courses, marinas, a mall, more than 160 restaurants, and a cluster of high-end hotels.
Orlandoâs head start remains formidable â it still offers multiple Disney and Universal parks, has decades of brand loyalty, and an infrastructure built to handle tens of millions of tourists annually.
But Abu Dhabi is catching up fast. Its combination of frictionless travel, year-round comfort, cutting-edge attractions, and a cultural scene that adds depth to the experience gives Abu Dhabi its own unique selling point, potentially offering a model for the next generation of theme park capital.

Lying down and vomiting between courses: This is how Ancient Romans would feast
