Good Day To Be A Geek

lotr On television (or similar) right now are: The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy), The Star Wars Saga (OT), Doctor Who/Torchwood, Robin Hood, Primeval, new ep of Pushing Daisies, and for me, the second viewing of S2 Dexter (because I still can’t stop). I’ve got RotK on the plasma and Dexter on the lappy. Next up: Hood and Primeval.

That is one heck of a selection, people!

Watchmen–check.

watchmen-logo I can love a movie right up until the big reveal of the villain’s plan or motivation, then I just start to tune out. It’s happened with several movies over the years, and Watchmen was no exception. Loved the backstories, loved the bit of mystery, loved the feel, then BAM! We find out the who and why, and I’m OUT. I started walking around, not paying attention, and generally not caring about what was happening. Still, it was a good movie. Not my favorite, but certainly better than that other superhero movie people loved last year.

2008 Fandom Meme

1: What fandoms did you acquire in 2008?
Fringe, Merlin, Legend of the Seeker, Psych

2: What fandoms did you let go of in 2008?
Stargate Atlantis

3: What fandoms did you mean to get into but didn’t in 2008? Why?
I keep saying I’m going to try BSG, but it hasn’t happened yet.

4: What fandoms do you intend on checking out in 2009?
I’m going to try BSG, I suppose.

5: What fandoms do you think you might let go of in 2009 unless things significantly improve?
Heroes is still a favorite, but I don’t think it will last much longer, so it could be a forced let go.

6: What fandoms do you think you’ll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?
Doctor Who springs to mind. Though not shows, LOTR and The Hobbit will never be let go–ever.

7: What show impressed you most in 2008?
Doctor Who was amazing. Legend of the Seeker was a surprise, so maybe it was the one that impressed me most.

8: What show impressed you least in 2008?
Stargate Atlantis.

Five Years Nothing

While enjoying the LOTR marathon (again), it struck me that The Return of the King was released five years ago. FIVE YEARS. I can’t get over the thrill of excitement every single time I see any of the trilogy. Five years ago my dad and I stood in freezing cold temperatures to get tickets for Ben and me to see the midnight showing and OMG it truly was frigid; yet worth it.

In the last five years: I saw the movie at midnight, again the next afternoon, and again a few days later. I downloaded it, ripped the audio from the movie, burned it to disc, listened to it non-stop in the car, bought the soundtrack, began collecting action figures, fell in love with Sean Bean and David Wenham, named my cats Hobbit and Istar, made nearly 100 fanvids, journeyed into slash, met wonderful fellow fans, read the book repeatedly, read The Hobbit, The Similrillion, and a few other Tolkien works, rewatched the movies (repeatedly, as well), got the “9” tattoo, scoured online sites and calendar stores for the newest (or leftover) items, and so much more.

It all feels new. Maybe it always will. Can’t wait for the next five years of fandom!
